The clavichord was in use for two centuries before the invention of the harpsichord, but continued in popularity for two more centuries afterward. Even when the piano was invented in the early 18th century, clavichords continued to be built and played for about another 100 years.
No other instrument sounds like a clavichord, or has quite the same expressive capabilities.
Contemporary documentary evidence shows that many well-known composers used the clavichord for both personal enjoyment and as an aid in composition, including CPE Bach, JS Bach, Handel, Mozart, and Beethoven. It is purported that Handel wrote the "Messiah" at the clavichord, and likewise Mozart the "Magic Flute".
That's why this site is here--to give musicians and music-lovers the chance to reevaluate the clavichord, and to reconsider what its possibilities may be. The reproduction Hass clavichord that I offer for sale is built with the needs of both the serious performer and student in mind.
